2017-12-23 Santa Cruz Lumber Company

Bruce Baker, a local logger and caretaker of timber properties in the area, gave a tour of some private property including the old Santa Cruz Lumber Company sawmill to a small group of people. This site opened in 1923 and operated continuously until 1955, when the original sawmill was refitted from steam power to electric, except for the carriage shot gun feed and log turner which remained steam powered. It operated until 1972, when it was closed. More info on the history of the lumber company and sawmill here.

Lifter mechanisim, used to lift bandsaw blades off of the saw and up into this room(the saw sharpening room) and lower sharpened blades back down onto the saw. The blade was hung on the semicircular feature then raised and lowered along the wooden tracks that run vertically up the wall. (B&W Experiment 1)

Large band saw at Santa Cruz Lumber Company Sawmill. This shot was an experiment, stiched together out of four separate images to simulate a wider angle lens than what I had. As such there are some odd distortions and lens flare artifacts, still somewhat interesting IMO.

Boiler Room Santa Cruz Lumber Co. Sawmill There is some motion blur in this, mostly since I had mirror lockup off and the shutter speed was in a range where MLU was needed. Also this is an extended ISO for my camera, which carries its own problems.
